The next time you’re at a loose end, you could do worse than take a look at the Clients From Hell website.
It’s full of horror stories, mainly but not exclusively, from freelancers that tell some of the messes they’ve got into with clients they weren’t able to manage.
- The one that complained his network wasn’t working only to discover the cable wasn’t plugged in
- The one that thinks you need a billboard-sized screen to design a billboard-sized poster
- The “friend” or family that thinks you should work for next to nothing or for free just because you have a relationship with them.
Luckily, not all clients are that bad. Indeed, most of the time they’re understanding, they appreciate what you do and they pay on time.
But I bet you’ve had one or two crackers in your time.
I’m going to let you into a secret not many business owners know.
You can choose your clients.
You heard it.
Chose the ones you want to work with and reject the ones you don’t.
That might be scary to you but just think about it.
Would you like to attract just anybody with a wallet and spend your time fighting off tyre-kickers, price complainers and the clients that always want a bit more?
Or would you like to attract people you enjoy working with, pay on time (or upfront) and talk about you to their friends?
It’s a no-brainer really.
In a word, it’s all about targeting. Target everybody and you’ll attract anybody. Target ideal clients and you’ll get ideal clients.
